In 1972, Fred Ebb, Bob Fosse, and Liza Minnelli joined composer Marvin Hamlisch to produce “the first filmed concert on television”: “Liza WIth a Z.” This one-woman show contains a crash course in mastery of stage performance. Though not a world class singer (no Tori Kelly riffs or Xtina range in this show), Liza Minnelli offers an outstanding and honest execution, setting a standard that still holds up today. Together, we’ll analyze Liza’s incredible, intensely real, constantly connected, masterful command of the stage with every word, sound, look, movement, and moment she creates. Although practiced and prepared, Liza demonstrates how to remain completely in-the-moment, reacting instead of acting; a core principle of Sanford Meisner’s acting technique. Using vignettes from this and performances from other superstars past and present, you’ll leave with practical tools to enhance your own performance and “sing it like you mean it.”
